The Red Wings recorded several shots on goal in the ensuing minutes, but Marc Andre-Fleury kept them out of the net. The Red Wings attempted 34 goals on shot, against just 24 shots for the Penguins. Pittsburgh Advances

Oct 11, 2014 9:14 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins streaked past the Philadelphia Flyers, 6-0, at home on Sunday afternoon to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. Ryan Malone and Evgeni Malkin each scored in the first period to put the Penguins up 2-0, and the Flyers never challenged as the Pittsburgh crowd was on its feet for nearly the full sixty minutes. Pittsburgh attempted 25 shots on goal, to just 21 for Philadelphia. Things got out of hand rather quickly in the second period, as the Pens scored three times in an eleven-minute stretch to put the nail in the coffin. Marian Hossa, Malone and Jordan Staal found the net in the second, as the Philadelphia defense and goalie Martin Biron appeared shell-shocked for most of the afternoon. Pascal Dupuis then joined the party at the 4:03 mark of the third period, pushing the score to 6-0 in favor of the Eastern Conference Champion Penguins. Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury recorded 21 saves en route to a series-clinching shutout. Both teams served ten minutes in the penalty box, but Pittsburgh made their opportunities count as they scored a pair of power play goals. The Penguins will play in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1992, as they await the winner of the Detroit/Dallas series.

Flyers Force Game Five

Jun 14, 2014 6:31 PM

The Philadelphia Flyers spoiled the Pittsburgh Penguins' bid at sweeping their way to the Stanley Cup Finals on Thursday night with a 4-2 win in Game Four. The Flyers played inspired hockey in the first period, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Joffery Lupul, Daniel Briere, and Jeff Carter. The Penguins recorded twenty-five shots on goal in the first and second periods, but Philadelphia goalie Martin Biron kept Pittsburgh off the board through the first forty minutes. Just as the Flyers appeared to have the game wrapped up, Jordan Staal found the net at the 3:16 mark in the third. The Penguins continued to attack throughout the final period, and Staal scored again just ten minutes after putting Pittsburgh on the board. The entire Wachovia Center appeared to collectively hold its breath over the next five minutes, but Biron and the Philadelphia defense were able to keep Sidney Crosby and the Penguins from tying the game. Marc-Andre Fleury was pulled in the final minute, and Lupul scored his second goal of the night on the empty net to put the game away with just 32 seconds left. Soon after, tempers flared. Pittsburgh's Ryan Malone and Philadelphia's Derian Hatcher exchanged punches behind the home goal and drew five-minute majors for fighting. Just seconds later, the teams began pushing and shoving once again after a face-off. The Penguins may be up 3-1, but the Flyers still seem to have a large amount of fight left. Biron finished the game with 36 saves while Fleury had 30 of his own in the loss. Game Five will be Saturday night in Pittsburgh as the Flyers look to push the series to a sixth game back home in Philadelphia.
